Book Review: Torment (Fallen #2) by Lauren Kate

Summary:
How many lives do you need to live before you find someone worth dying for? In the aftermath of what happened at Sword & Cross, Luce has been hidden away by her cursed angelic boyfriend, Daniel, in a new school filled with Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans. Daniel promises she will be safe here, protected from those who would kill her. At the school Luce discovers what the Shadows that have followed her all her life mean - and how to manipulate them to see into her other lives. Yet the more Luce learns about herself, the more she realizes that the past is her only key to unlocking her future...and that Daniel hasn't told her everything. What if his version of the past isn't actually the way things happened...what if Luce was really meant to be with someone else?

Review:
I just could not get into this bookI was on a book tour via Good Golly Miss Holly and I felt pressured to read this book quickly even though I had other books I really wanted to read instead.  Book tours always make me feel that way, which was the deciding factor in my decision to stop signing up for book tours.   That may have been a factor in my overall feelings about Torment.  Because I found the 40 pages I did read to be pretty flat and uninteresting.

I did not emphasize with Daniel and Luce's 18 days of separation.  Really, 18 days?  We're going to have major drama over being separated for 18 days?  My husband and I were separated for three YEARS while we were engaged and he was 12 hours away in law school.  So, the 18 day separation put me off from the beginning.  When I saw that each chapter encompassed one day, I was further dismayed and ended up deciding that there are too many books out there that I really want to read to force myself to read one I'm not excited about.

I don't think fallen angels are for me.  I have not really enjoyed any angel book I've read, except for Cynthia Hand's UnearthlyHush, Hush, Angelfire, Covet, Fallen, and now Torment just did not do it for me, and I think I'm going to steer clear of the fallen angel premise for now.

Did Not Finish

  1. That's too bad that you couldn't get into this one. I've actually been putting it off because I really didn't enjoy Fallen all that much...I think I'm one of the few. It was so bland and slow for me. Thanks for the honest review! :)

  2. O I have the same issue with blog tours. That's why I stopped doing them. Honestly, I dislike being constricted.

    Thanks for your honest take/review.

You're right, 18 days is funny. But I remember when I was a teen 18 days felt like forever. LOL :D

So why do you think fallen angels turn you off? Are they too dark?

  3. I am beginning to think that fallen angels aren't for me either. Maybe it's the whole unattainable element - and I'm not talking about the desirable kind of "unattainable". I'm talking about the "we really can never be together" kind. I need physical contact! This is why I generally will not read books about ghosts.

I've actually had this book sitting on my shelf for months now but I haven't had the desire to pick it up. I remember Fallen starting off really s-l-o-w.

  4. I liked Fallen okay, but I didn't love it, and Torment really bothered me. I did finish it, mostly because I have issues with not finishing books, but a lot of it felt like a chore, and if you were annoyed with Daniel and Luce in the beginning- Gag... It only gets worse.

I've read a few fallen angel books, and none of them have been favorites. I'm tempted to just give up on them now, but I might try one or two more... Who knows. It's a shame that the books are never too great, because the covers tend to be awesome! :)

  5. I do like fallen angel books, but I haven't picked up this series. To me, it sounds a bit 'meh' and nothing special. Going by your review I think I'll be putting it even further on the backburner.

If you ever want to try out another angel book I would recommend Angel by L.A Weatherly. It's publishing in the US next year.

  6. Thanks for your review. I wasn't overly impressed with Fallen either, although I liked enough to look forward to Torment. I have a feeling I'll end up feeling about it similar to you.

  7. I never could get into Fallen, so I'm thinking my trip with Torment may be the same.
