Book Review: The Season by Sarah MacLean

Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Lady Alexandra Stafford doesn’t fit into the world of Regency London — she’s strong-willed, sharp-tongued, and she absolutely loathes dress fittings. Unfortunately, her mother has been waiting for years for Alex to be old enough to take part in the social whirlwind of a London Season so she can be married off to someone safe, respectable, wealthy, and almost certainly boring. But Alex is much more interested in adventure than romance.

Between sumptuous balls, lavish dinner parties and country weekends, Alex, along with her two best friends, Ella and Vivi, manages to get entangled in her biggest scrape yet. When the Earl of Blackmoor is killed in a puzzling accident, Alex decides to help his son, the brooding and devilishly handsome Gavin, uncover the truth. It’s a mystery brimming with espionage, murder, and suspicion. As she and Gavin grow closer, will Alex’s heart be stolen in the process?

Romance and danger fill the air, as this year’s Season begins!

Review:
I love historical fiction so I was expecting to gobble this book up faster than a Sonic burger (my favorite food these days).  However, I just could not get into this one.  I stopped about 40 pages in and picked up something else instead.

I tried on several different days to read The Season but never felt invested in the story.  I don't know if it was me, or the open-mouthed, fly-catching expression on the girl in the teal dress on the cover (I just despise a wide-open trap like that), but I didn't finish this one despite having read several positive reviews.

  1. Ahhh well, it happens to the best of us, right? The cover doesn't particularly appeal to me either. The girl looks stuck up, to be honest. I doubt this would be for me despite the promising premise. Thanks for your honesty! :)

  3. Too bad on this one! It's certainly happened to all of us so hopefully your next read will be better:) And now that you've pointed out that girl's mouth, I can't stop staring at it.

  4. I had that happen to me when I read "The Disreputable History.." by E. Lockhart. I couldn't get into it no matter how many positive reviews and awards the book won. Hopefully, you'll like your next book. :)

  7. Sorry to hear you didn't like this one, but I'm also kind of happy. I couldn't get very far into this one either (I'm not even sure if I made it to page 40). I just didn't connect with the characters. They also seemed far too modern for the setting.

  8. You can't have a winner all the time. Going to avoid this one. At least you did try.

  11. I've read this book a dozen times and have enjoyed it everytime that I pick it up. It doesn't bother me that one of the girls on the cover has her mouth open, I think of it as a picture taken when she wasn't ready, but the publishers liked the picture and decided to make it the cover (you never know, maybe it was). I've just read this bool for my 13th time and it was even more amazing then the last time. I think that everytime I finish it I understand it a little bit more.

For those of you that've picked up this book and put it down because you could'nt get in to it, or because in the first 40 pages it was uneventful or boring, I'm asking you to pick this book back up and give it another try, or at least finish it.
