Book Review: Rilla of Ingleside (Anne of Green Gables #8) by LM Montgomery

Summary:
No one could resist her bright hazel eyes and dazzling smile. Rilla, almost 15, can't think any further ahead than going to her very first dance at the Four Winds lighthouse and getting her first kiss from handsome Kenneth Ford.

Review:
Going off of the summary, this book sounds, as my book-snob husband would say, a little weak.  I wasn't expecting too much depth from a 15-year old main character, but I was surprised at the direction Rilla of Ingleside took.

Rilla is one of Anne and Gilbert's six children and this is her coming-of-age story.  I have to say that Rilla of Ingleside is the best coming-of-age book I've ever read.  I usually don't make a habit of reading that genre, but as this was included in the Anne of Green Gables series I purchased for Nook, I decided to try it and I'm so glad I did!

Rilla of Ingleside follows Rilla Blythe for several years (five or six if I'm not mistaken).  Rilla starts off being a typical young teenager, worrying over what to wear to her first dance and longing to be kissed.  Then, World War I starts and the Canadian boys start enlisting in the military.  Suddenly, Rilla's world, and all of Canada, is in an uproar.  Rilla grows up a lot throughout the book, and that kind of character growth is my favorite thing to read about.

Rilla of Ingleside ended the Anne of Green Gables series on a strong note for me, and I think it was my second favorite book in the entire series.  The innocent sweetness of these books has been a breath of fresh air for me.

Just One Gripe:
I still miss reading about Anne and Gilbert.  There was a little more of them in this book than some of the others, but I still wanted more.

The Best Thing About This Book:
I loved the look into life on the Canadian home-front during World War I.  With historical fiction being my favorite genre, I just devoured this book!

Appropriate for a younger audience:

  5. I haven't read this one yet. But I agree, the last few Anne books just didnt have enough Anne and Gilbert interaction.
