I'm Afraid to Read This Book...

So, recently Barnes and Noble made a mistake in my favor and sent me my pre-ordered copy of The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead 20 days early! (read the details here)  Hey, I wasn't about to send it back.  I just couldn't, even though I knew it was the right thing to do.

So, imagine my surprise when I didn't start reading it immediately.  In fact, I waited 5 days to start it.  I couldn't believe I was doing that, and each day I told myself that I would start the book at nap time (my only reading time as a SAHM to a 14-month old), but then each day I had so many other things to do during my coveted nap time hours.

Finally, I realized something: I was putting off reading The Golden Lily.  Once I came to this realization, I had to explore why I was doing it.  And the reason I came to is this: I am afraid to start the book because I am afraid it won't live up to my expectations.  I have been building this book up in my head for a year now, and I'm so afraid it won't be what I want it to be.

Has this kind of thing ever happened to you?  If so, what did you do?  I'm just going to jump right in and see what happens.  Wish me luck!

  1. I know exactly what you mean! This has happened to me too. In fact, I still haven't read Bloodlines because as much as I love Richelle, I was afraid of the spin-off not doing VA justice. Reading this post though, it sounds like I don't have much to worry about, lol.

  2. Yes! Mockinjay. I prepurchased it.
    I love the series.
But I'm afraid to let go.
    So there is sits.
All this time keeps passing and I avoid it.
I think I will continue to avoid it until the film comes out.
    Bad huh? ;)
    Happy weekend.

  3. Well, speaking as someone who is doing the EXACT same thing with Bitterblue right now, I definitely understand where you're coming from. Really, the only thing to do is to take a deep breath, try to set your expectations down to a normal level, and go for it! (And now, I just need to do the same, LOL.)

  4. I haven't even finished The Vampire Academy books but I totally understand how you feel. I've heard a lot of people say they worried about this too though and ended up really enjoying it!

  5. Haha!!! Of course, I've done and still do this!! I usually put off a good book (esp. ones in series) because I know the wait for the next book is almost a year, but I've put off for other reasons as well, like not wanting to be disappointed.
