Book Read-Along: Owlet by Emma Michaels

I'm happy to be part of the blog tour for Owlet by Emma Michaels.  Below is my portion of the read-along for Owlet (the first book in Emma's new Society of Feathers series).

Owlet Read-Along

“Of course. I remember asking you a few years ago where you go when you’re on vacation; you said you didn’t like to talk about it.”

“It is because I was scared of what you might think. I don’t want you to think that the only reason I stay by your side is because of your mother and I wasn’t ready to answer the questions I know you will ask.”

“What questions?” Iris’ thoughts suddenly scattered, she wasn’t sure she understood what she was hearing.

“Please, hear me out. Your grandfather, Nathaniel, was one of the best men I have ever known. I know I never told you and I am sorry, but your mother was like a sister to me. Literally, she and Nathaniel took me in. I realize I am a lot younger, but she and Nathaniel were so lonely after her mother’s death that when they found out about me and my situation they took me in. First as just a playmate for Elena, but then slowly I got to be closer to Nathaniel and when Elena left home, I stayed. We stayed close because I adored her. Naturally, when she died I left Nathaniel’s side and came to you. He agreed with me that it was the best idea. Please, I brought this with me so that you could see...hopefully Roger won’t remember where he left it. I just needed to show you. I need you to know that it is because I love you, not because I loved her.”

Diana looked back down at her purse to the item sticking out of it. Slowly she reached in and pulled it out. It was larger than Iris had expected. It was a sketchbook like the ones her father sometimes carried around with him. Diana started flipping through pages, keeping it angled away from Iris so she couldn’t see until she stopped on a page and smiled. She turned it towards Iris and Iris felt her breath catch in her throat. It was a picture of Diana holding her as a baby with Iris’ mother standing next to her smiling. Iris felt her blood run cold. Her breathing was getting ragged and Diana took out an inhaler and handed it to her. Iris clenched her fist around it so tightly that her fingers went numb and then started to burn.

“She...was...alive?” Iris managed to say.

Want to know more?  Here's the summary for Owlet:

Somewhere between falling and flying… there is a girl.

Iris has a secret. She lost her memory eight years ago and never told a living soul. After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.
