How much is too much to pay for an ebook?

Since receiving my Kindle Paperwhite (and smart cover) from my mother-in-law for Christmas, I've been buying a lot of ebooks.  I am totally obsessed with my Kindle and find it hard to pick up hard copies to read nowadays---even when it's a book I really want to read.  My husband also received a Kindle from his mom and loves his as well.  We both agree that the Kindle Paperwhite is a great improvement over our 1G Nooks.  Now that I've been reading on a back-lit screen, I have no idea how I made it so many years having to read under a lamp (gasp!).

Which brings me to my question for you: how much are you willing to pay for an ebook?  Anything over $10 feels like too much for me.  If it's a book I'm dying to read, such as the lastest Sookie Stackhouse novel, I'll pay $13 or $14, but I paid $17 for Janet Evanovich's latest and felt totally gypped when I finished the book two hours later and knew I'd never read it again.  My husband is a big fan of Ken Follett and wants to read the second novel in the Fall of Giants trilogy, but it's $19.99, which he thinks is ridiculous.

What are your thoughts?  How much is too much for an ebook?

  1. I'm with you. I don't like to pay over $10. Maybe $10.99 is okay, but I'd rather stick to $9.99 or less. Maybe I'd feel less guilty if I had proof that a higher price was needed to pay the author the same amount of royalties as a paper copy would create. I think books are generally over-priced and I do wonder how much not physically printing them saves.

  2. $19.99? That is total crazy talk! Wow.

I liked it better when Amazon was trying to control publishers from pricing eBooks too high.

I'm with you. For that price, I'd be waiting for my library to get it.

  3. I guess it would be more less than a regular hard copy book thou since it's digital copy

  4. I refuse to pay more than $10 for an ebook and even at $10 I don't buy too many! I would rather but 10 books from an author I love at a reasonable price than 1 for an astronomical price. It's the publishers that jack the price up and I do understand that they need to get paid too but dang. What also pisses me off is if you buy a book at that price and you can't even loan it to one person...come on really SMDH!! Sorry but I could get on my soapbox about this but I won't lol. Have a great day. Tanya @ kindlehooked.blogspot.com

  5. I bought a Kindle almost a year ago and I've spent my own money on only a handful of ebooks and they were all under $5. I refuse to spend more than that. If it's a book I really want chances are it cost the same as a physical copy (and I've see it a number of times, sometimes more). I like to hold the things I've spent my money on, so my Kindle is more for free/won and the less than $5 ebooks, than anything else.

  6. I'm in total agreement, anything over $10 feels like too much, though I will go up to $15 without batting an eyelash. Anything over that and I may as well get the hardcover. The thing is, I have a Kindle and there are always so many deals, even on really popular bestsellers like Gone Girl. So I often just wait it out and but it on a deal day (I certainly have enough in my TBR to keep me occupied while I wait).
