Book Review: The Heiress of Winterwood (Whispers on the Moors #1) by Sarah E. Ladd

Summary:
Darbury, England, 1814

Amelia Barrett, heiress to an ancestral estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s infant baby. She'll risk everything to keep her word—even to the point of proposing to the child’s father, Graham, a sea captain she’s never met.

Tragedy strikes when the child vanishes with little more than a sketchy ransom note hinting to her whereabouts. Fear for the child’s safety drives Amelia and Graham to test the boundaries of their love for this infant.

Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she examines her soul and must face her one weakness: pride.

Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline.

Both must learn to accept God’s sovereignty and relinquish control so they can grasp the future He has for planned for them.

Review:
There is just nothing like good Christian fiction to break up my typical YA paranormal reading routine.  And not only was The Heiress of Winterwood Christian fiction, it was historical fiction as well, which made it even more of a treat for me.

I loved the premise of this book: a woman raising her best friend's baby after the mother died in childbirth.  Amelia takes her pledge to care for Lucy so seriously, and lets nothing get in the way of fulfilling her promise.  I loved Amelia and Lucy's interactions.  Amelia loves Lucy like she is her own daughter and has raised her since birth.

The love story has a slow progression, which I appreciated.  I liked that Amelia and Graham start out as strangers but slowly start to develop feelings for each other.  I also enjoyed both characters' return to faith in God, and thought that part of the story was very well-handled.

There were parts of this book that were a little predictable, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.  I enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story, and was quite surprised by the outcome of one of the main characters.

I would recommend The Heiress of Winterwood to fans of Christian fiction and fans of historical fiction.  I will definitely keep reading this series, and can't wait to see who is featured in the next book!
